Nisus Corporation is the world’s largest manufacturer of green pest control products. Now they are bringing that expertise to the wood preservation industry that services the railroad industry in the form of two green, non-restricted use preservatives: QNAP® Copper Naphthenate and Cellutreat® Liquid Borate DOT (Disodium Octaborate Tetrahydrate).
Copper Naphthenate (CuN) is an industrial strength oil-borne wood preservative with proven performance and a superior environmental profile. CuN has clean handling characteristics and virtually no drippage or bleeding. It is classified as a non-restricted use preservative by EPA and therefore is considered acceptable for consumer use and can be purchased at building supply centers. Copper Naphthenate meets AWPA standards for the pressure treatment of railroad crossties, switch ties, bridge timbers, and utility poles, and is approved by AREMA Committee 30 – Ties and will be published in the 2014 Manual for Railway Engineering. Copper Naphthenate can be used as a remedial treatment for bridge timbers and utility poles, and as an end-cut treatment for ties and timber. When Copper Naphthenate is used as an over-treatment in conjunction with DOT, a synergistic effect occurs.
Cellutreat Liquid Borate DOT is a wood preservative that can be used in pressure treatments or dip treatments. DOT prevents decay fungi, termites, carpenter ants and beetles. It has been standardized by AWPA and approved by AREMA Committee 30 – Ties as part of a dual treatment for crossties and bridge timbers where green ties are dipped in a DOT solution before air seasoning in order to prevent decay during the seasoning process. The ties are then over-treated with an oil-borne preservative such as creosote or Copper Naphthenate.
These new green tie treatments are available at Mellott Wood Preserving, Inc., Needmore, PA; Boatright Companies, Montevallo, AL; Cahaba Pressure Treated Forest Products, Inc., Brierfield, AL; Wheeler Lumber, LLC, Whitewood, SD; Gross & Janes Co., Kirkwood, MO; and The Pacific Wood Preserving Companies, Bakersfield, CA.

The Steuben County Industrial Development Agency (IDA) is the designated economic development organization for Steuben County tasked with business development activities in the County. A major area of development in recent years has been the development of opportunities around our rail infrastructure. The IDA has owned the Bath and Hammondsport rail line since 1996 and in 2012 received $727,578 in funding through the New York State Consolidated Funding Application process to rehabilitate two miles of track from the main line in Bath to the IDA-owned industrial park. The last train to run on this section of track was in 1992. The rehabilitation is being done in partnership between the State of New York, the IDA and the B&H Rail Corporation who operates the line. Work is expected to be done in mid-2013, opening up over 50 acres of land for development along the rail line.
